Surprising Sharks!

Last week we learned all about sharks. We have learnt lots of fascinating facts through reading our book  “Surprising Sharks”, completing our shark reading trail, reading shark fact pages and asking writing questions for Miss Coggan’s friend Ed, who works with sharks!

We labelled the different features of a book (Surprising Sharks) and a fact page.

Here we are enjoying our shark reading trail!

Ed the Shark Conservationist answered our questions.

Look at our new Reading Areas!

At Russell Scott Primary School we strive to promote a love of reading. We asked the children what kind of reading areas they would like in their classrooms and and they came up with lots of fabulous ideas. We copied the covers of our favourite books and chose stories to decorate our areas with. We decided we would love to have tents, cushions and special chairs to sit on while we were reading. We love our new reading areas! If you would like to come and see them for yourself, please join us at one of our reading mornings. We hold them every Tuesday at 9:00-9:25am!

Caught on CCTV!

We arrived at school to find another mess this morning! Our cheeky elves were doing flour angels!

We checked the CCTV footage and found that our homemade CCTV cameras had caught something going on in the bay area…

After watching the CCTV, we wrote about today’s shenanigans. We’re getting so good at using exclamation marks!

Tinkerbell has been poisoned!

Oh no! We arrived at school today to find Tinkerbell unconscious in our classroom!

We were very concerned so we checked the CCTV footage…

At first we thought that Witch Kingsley and Witch Coggan had left their Halloween potion lying around again, but then we found this message from the evil Captain Hook!

We had to read and follow a set of instructions to make a medicine to wake Tinkerbell up. We also left her a note and we’re hoping she’ll have made a full recovery by tomorrow!

How to make Halloween potion…

Our teachers had the day off yesterday and were replaced by two wicked witches! Miss Kingsley and Miss Coggan were back as usual today, but Witch Kingsley and Witch Coggan had left us a spooky surprise!

After smelling the disgusting Halloween potion, we watched a video message from the witches, teaching us how to make it!

We described the icky ingredients and wrote the first part of a set of instructions:

Come back tomorrow to read the second part of our instructions!

A virtual author visit from Greg Dobbins!

We are such lucky children! Today we were treated to a Skype visit from Greg Dobbins, author of The Grumpy Teddy. He read the story to us and then answered some of our interesting questions. There were so many fantastic questions that we simply couldn’t choose the best 10, so we pulled names out of a hat! Thank you to Greg for taking the time to Skype with us. We learnt that his favourite books are Watership Down and the Gruffalo and he told us that you have to read lots of books if you want to become an author like him. He even showed us the final manuscript of his brand new book which isn’t even in the shops yet! We can’t wait to read it when it’s published!

Greg also answered some more of our questions on Twitter.

He said that the illustrator of The Grumpy Teddy would be very impressed by our puppets!

Here is Greg, reading The Grumpy Teddy!

This week we reviewed the book and wrote letters to Greg:

We also learnt about question and exclamation marks and wrote conversations between the Grumpy Teddy and the characters he meets in the story:
